Cooking Tree

I have started a rough outline of the cooking tree, with food allocated to tiers based on their values. Stamina regen food were given the highest value so they are mostly available later in the tier. I added a bunch of ancillary skills for the cooking tree that fit the farming/homesteading theme and a good number will directly aid cooking tree stuff and also other tabs.

I will start working on rough recipes for the food soon and try to post pics or a link to imgur.

very good that.. not sure about a copper oven I was going to do a stone oven as a starters, but same principle.

Glad you like it, I focus on making things fit your ideal for MFII while still being distinctive and also, to my untrained knowledge, appear to be reasonably code-able.

I really think copper should be the base level- at least in my playthrough I have so much excess copper having more uses would be good.. I throw all my tin into making bronze to get to black steel and still have ample copper left over even with the 2:1 ratio.

I also couldn't figure if there should be any more than three tiers of ovens. I think copper-iron-steel seems to fit your needs, and given that it's going to be challenging enough to get to black steel and beyond, probably a reasonable tier system.

I've designed cakes and pies to be steel-level (as you see their made from steel). stew, oats, etc was ment to be tier 1, I also tend to class carrot cake and chocolate cake the same tier, black forest is a high tier.

Black red and blue steel will make anything as normal steel (take anvils for example). so id imagine steel or even black steel would be a higher tier, red and blue could just be more effective.

Oh and farming... crops are stubborn things that only grow on the soil block (and only the soil block) being referenced by ID it means crops (vanilla, and most likely all mods). will not accept any other.. seeds could make an "improved wheat/carrot/etc" but mods will have no effect. That's one of the reasons I don't do much with farming...

But... Loam could go underneath a soil block and indirectly force crops to grow faster...

I'm not confident with cooking, but id imagine it just needs some work

Mmm, will the pie trays be reusable? I know you want iron buckets to be consumed when making cheese, but having steel pie trays be consumed might be a bit much. I was thinking steel pie tins wouldn't be a problem too much early on because while the copper oven would be fairly easy to make, the iron and steel ones were going to require plates. People would be able to make steel pie trays much sooner than iron/steel ovens, so they can at least get started on cakes and berry pies.

I put chocolate cake in the same class as black forest because it regens stamina for double the rate as carrot cake, although for half as long. Based on my gameplay, the higher stamina regen is far more valuable. I'm not even sure what ingredients black forest is supposed to have compared to chocolate, so I wasn't sure how much more difficult it'd be to make. Could move the chocolate cake down to T4 and move the Meat Pie up to T5, keep the goodies spread out a bit.

I have seen several mods that add special soil blocks that specifically improve crop growth directly, and also crop blocks that could not be trampled. So, it's doable, but your idea might not be that bad either for loam. But, would need to figure something for rich loam to prevent the farm block above rich loam from being trampled, unless we scrap that option and just make it even faster than normal loam.

The cooking overall isn't too bad, I made a spreadsheet for all the states and it's decently balanced. Only way to really know is to be able to make them and use them in-game. I'd say keep them as is and if you like the tree I suggested for sure, implement them in that route, then we can test and tweak.

Still skeptical that it's worth making red/blue steel tiers for ovens. Strong flux won't be that common, and I know for myself personally all red/blue steel would be focused towards weapons, tools, and armor. It's kinda nice to not have all metals be useful for everything too.

BF cake regenerates as fast as choc and as long as carrot so its better

Don't use plates in recipes though.. since their really armour research.. kinda not much sense behind that. also theyd be made on an anvil.

Probably good keeping the vanilla furnace since the silly thing is persistent, but big furnaces would need to be thought of for more balancing...

Ah, the bucket consumption is a vanilla mechanic?

Yeah, pretty sure it's a separate crop block, but they work for all crops best I can tell.

Like I said, I wasn't sure how easy it is to make BF cake compared to chocolate. If BF is gonna require rare ingredients, then Choc as a "lesser" option on T5 made sense to me. Switching chocolate cake and meat pie on the list sound good?

Why not use plate for the oven? I think you should consider about how the mod as a whole can work together, not just limit each tab just to its own devices. Cross-tab interaction heightens the thinking on the part of the player and increases the entertainment value.

It makes sense that an oven would be made of bigger pieces of metal, and since they're already plates, they could just be "put together" on a carpenter bench. I figured the anvil would be limited to mostly hot metals, weapons, tools, armor, etc. while the carpenter bench can do the crafting of everything else. It spreads out the work across the two stations, in the name of balance.

Using plate for the iron and steel ovens would also make it take players a little longer to get to the better food. Your entire fighting system is built around the stamina bar, so the foods you have that give stamina boost and regen become highly desirable. Making people unlock plate components and the heavy hammer first feels like a good means of balancing obtaining the best foods.

Part of the lore I thought about suggesting in the tab for plate crafting:

"You are not satisfied with mere chainmesh or studded leather armor. You have gotten stronger, to the point you can merge ingots into thicker metal plates. With a little padding, you see a means of crafting the sturdiest armor possible. Interestingly, you see that the plate could have other possible uses besides armor..."

On the icon for the iron and steel ovens in the cooking tab, I was going to suggest having a "requires research elsewhere first!" sort of notice.

Also, once you craft a given oven, you're set. It has no durability, so you'll never need to craft one again. Increasing the cost slightly but reasonably makes it more worthwhile. I actually just thought that it would be a good idea to have the iron/steel bars in the recipes too, since your awesome ovens from 1.6.4 had bars on the front!

I was wondering if big furnaces would be back in. I suggest just making them like they were before: multiblock, 4 slots for smelting, and speed improves as the metal improves.

Another thing was the research itself.. I like the thaumcraft style, so you can use that as a reference.

Well with furnaces: simply making it faster wont cut it because vanilla furnaces are already pretty fast and since you can pretty much line your walls with them: there's no real problem with timing. that's what MF1 furnaces were: if you want metal you need the tools... but the vanilla furnace should remain anyway

Eh, I would advise against adding "metal sheets" and just using ingots if you don't want to use plates. I would avoid adding more stuff that only has one use.

I have tried to keep the TC style in mind but make it a little more unique, mostly with trying to make the different tabs work in harmony in regards to some of the locked icons that players can unlock as opposed to making every tab completely isolated. I just feel a total experience is more fun when players discover something in smithing that can help with cooking, and something in cooking that can help with smithing.

I'll take a look at the vanilla cake recipe then work on basing some cake recipes off that for your cakes. I think I only ever made cake in MC once in four years. I have no idea how you planned to make salad without lettuce. Leaf blocks?

The furnaces have plenty of value. You can smelt four items for one coal, whereas four vanilla furnaces would use 4 times the amount of coal for the same task, so the "wall of furnaces" isn't better. It's highly efficient in coal usage, and while requiring a lot of metal for the mutliblock structures is expensive, the blocks can always be taken back and used for other things if the player decides to do so.

If you're already fiddling with lowering the torch radius, why not take a gander at lowering the smelting speed of the vanilla furnace so you can balance out smelt speed across tiers?

Ha.. coal is cheap, doesnt matter if you use more, and you could use wood anyway. I cant change the smelting speed though.

Black forest cake uses juicy berries as well as chocolate

Not sure about salad and spice, just added them for no apparent reason

The spice can be used in the meat pies, and probably on the meat sandwiches. Just make the BF cake recipe have 2 choc and 2 juicy berries on top and eliminate the sugar.

I forgot, what did you do in 1.6.4 to disable vanilla furnaces? At least I swore you did something. I can't load my 1.6.4 world to check with the MC launcher since I updated to java 8. Mojang, you suck. Gotta find out if MultiMC5 has java backdating capabilities.

How about dropping the salad? Stew, oats, and jerky should be enough for T2. Were oats going to be made from flour and milk? Not sure what tier icing should be, perhaps add that as a T2 unlock since sweet rolls are on T3.

I removed all the crafting recipes and re-added them ignoring a blacklist, it worked just villagers(those stupid knob-heads) had them and other mods used furnaces in crafting
