KML output formats for Google Maps

Postgis has an ST_AsKML function which would allow direct import into Google Maps. This could be implemented as another extension type.

An interesting idea. Any thoughts on how the styling would be provided? (Or is it necessary?)

This could be implemented in the same way that SVG is handled currently. A custom function can supply the KML document (using ST_AsKML and whatever additional styling & attribute generation is required). The function is called by a request with a .kml data format extension, which triggers pg_featureserv to use the KML mimetype for the response.

This would be made easier if there was a KML analogue of pg_svg.

@beasteers can you provide some details about your use cae?

Our team is having trouble cross-communicating our location scouting data (points with basic metadata). Part of the team uses a mix of QGIS and spreadsheets and the field team uses google mymaps because it's easy to use for directions on the road.

We're consolidating the information in postgis and pg_tile/featureserv covers QGIS (at least for reads, not full CRUD), but still need to integrate with the field team.

They mostly use it for navigation when they're out in the field and could switch to other tools to manage metadata when they're back in the office, meaning that read-only access from google maps might be a compromise.

Although, looking into this more - importing from URL doesn't seem to be an option in google mymaps so this might not be as clean a solution as we originally thought.

Idk we're still looking for a good solution. It'd be great if we could find something like google mymaps that's OGC API-compatible.
