I'm using the most current fabric version on 1.19.2, along with a number of other mods (I can get the full list once I get home if needed), mainly quality of life and selected mods from the Better Minecraft modpack + Create.
If any one item is placed in the backpack crafting table then it can be crafted into brown dye. If the crafting table is filled with 9 items that don't make a recipe (for example, wheat into a bale will still craft correctly) then it crafts the 733T wool from the Bewitched mod.
Going into REI there are recipes for a blank crafting grid for both the brown dye and the modded wool, but items still craft (or show blank) on a regular crafting table.
I only noticed this after installing the Infusion Table mod (the one that rips enchantments from items), but I could have easily missed it happening prior to that.
