FinLens — Project Overview

Understanding your cloud infrastructure without needing deep cloud expertise.

Executive Summary

FinLens is an offline-first cloud visibility tool designed to help non-technical decision makers understand infrastructure clearly.

It produces deterministic, self-contained reports that:

  • Freeze cloud state in time
  • Require no backend to consume
  • Remain usable long after generation
  • Prioritize human clarity over technical noise

FinLens does not attempt to replace dashboards or automate infrastructure. It exists to enable confident decision-making.


Why Open Source

FinLens is open-source because transparency builds trust. Users should be able to inspect how reports are generated and understand exactly how decisions are derived.


Core Principles

  1. Data is the contract.
  2. Clarity over completeness.
  3. Offline-first by default.

We will not sacrifice clarity for feature velocity.


High-Level Flow

There is no reverse flow. The report is final and immutable for decision review.

FinLens is a tool that helps people understand their cloud infrastructure without needing deep cloud expertise.

Today, cloud platforms produce a huge amount of technical data. That data is useful for engineers, but it is confusing and overwhelming for business users such as founders, product managers, and operations teams. These people are responsible for making decisions, but they often cannot answer basic questions like:

  • What resources are actually running in our cloud?
  • Which services are we using and how are they configured?
  • Are there unused or idle resources?
  • What is the current state of our infrastructure?

FinLens exists to answer these questions clearly, calmly, and honestly.

It does not try to replace cloud dashboards. It does not try to manage infrastructure. It does not try to automate fixes. Instead, it focuses on one thing only:

Helping humans make better decisions about their cloud usage.


2. The Core Problem We Are Solving

The core problem is not technical. The core problem is understanding.

Cloud data today is:

  • Tied to live systems that change constantly
  • Designed for engineers, not decision makers

FinLens changes this by freezing cloud data into a clear, readable snapshot that anyone can open, understand, and discuss.


3. Who FinLens Is Built For

4. What FinLens Produces

FinLens produces offline, self-contained reports.

A FinLens report:

  • Can be opened without internet access
  • Does not require cloud credentials after creation
  • Can be shared, archived, and revisited months or years later

Each report acts like a snapshot of reality, not a live dashboard.

This is intentional. Decisions are usually made in meetings, reviews, or audits — not while watching real-time graphs. FinLens is designed for those moments.


5. What FinLens Will Not Do

To stay focused and trustworthy, FinLens intentionally does not do many things that other tools try to do.

FinLens will not:

  • Monitor systems in real time
  • Send alerts or notifications
  • Automatically change or fix infrastructure
  • Enforce budgets or policies
  • Require a backend server to view reports
  • Lock users into a SaaS platform (especially in early versions)

These are not oversights. They are deliberate choices to avoid complexity, loss of trust, and confusion.


6. How FinLens Works — High Level Flow

At a high level, FinLens works in a very simple sequence:

  1. A user runs FinLens on their own machine
  2. FinLens reads configuration about which cloud accounts and regions to inspect
  3. FinLens collects information about cloud services and resources
  4. The collected data is carefully processed and structured
  5. A final report is generated
  6. The report opens in a browser and can be shared or saved

After the report is created, FinLens is no longer needed to view it.

We do not write code before clarity is established.

Before implementing anything, we follow a strict mindset:
