Pub Sub Node connects then immediately disconnects. No messages recieved

I've been stringgling to get pub / sub messages from google cloud to appear in node-red. After getting lots of errors about project-id missing, not being permissioned and various other things I now have my flow with no errors. However the pubsub node says connecting, then connected and then immediately disconnected.

I don't know what else to try. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Node Red: v3.0.2 (running on raspberry pi)
Node.js: v16.16.0
node-red-contrib-google-cloud: v0.0.26
