<h4>Option 1</h4>
<p>
With this option, the sub is connected to the amp with a separate cable run. This makes it easy
to position the sub independently of the speakers.
</p>
<p>
There is no way for the sub to alter the signal going to the speakers so all it can do
is to "fill in" the lower octave or two. Good integration relies on careful adjustment of the sub high-pass
cutoff frequency and phase.
</p>
<p>
The natural roll-off of a speaker is 12db/octave for a sealed box and 24db/octave for a ported "bass-reflex" design. Since
hardly any subs have the option to change roll-off, they can only work properly with one type of speaker. This is (one of many)
arguments in favour of active crossover designs.
</p>

<h4>Option 2</h4>
<p>
Here, the sub is connected in between the amplifier and the speakers. Electrically, the sub is still in
parallel with the speakers. However, there is the possibility for it to passively high-pass filter the signal going to the
speakers.
</p>
<p>
If there is no high-pass filter then, as before, good integration relies on careful adjustment of the crossover controls.
If there is a high-pass filter built into the sub then things get more interesting
as frequencies lower than the crossover point will be attenuated before being passed to the speakers.
This is what happens with Home Theatre In a Box systems where the satellites are too small
to play low frequencies without damage or distortion. In systems with amply sized speakers, there are still
benefits to be had as the total power output required of the speakers will be reduced.
</p>
<p>
Good integration is possible if the assumptions made by the crossover designer concerning the type
of speaker being used are correct. This is one of the situations where it is advisable to buy the speakers and sub from the same
manufacturer/product line.
