OpenBlog Development Roadmap

Overview

This roadmap defines the logical progression from infrastructure to deployment for the OpenBlog platform. Each phase builds upon the previous, ensuring a solid foundation before adding layer-specific functionality.


Phase Sequence

Phase 1: Infrastructure & Core Setup

Duration: Foundation
Focus: Next.js project initialization, Postgres database schema, and authentication foundation

  • Initialize Next.js 14+ project with TypeScript
  • Configure Tailwind CSS with design tokens from DESIGN.md
  • Set up Postgres database with core schema (Users, Posts, Metadata)
  • Integrate BetterAuth for authentication
  • Establish environment configuration system

Phase 2: Content Management & API Layer

Duration: Backend Logic
Focus: CRUD operations, Markdown/LaTeX rendering, and API endpoints

  • Implement Post model with visibility controls (Public/Private)
  • Build RESTful API endpoints for all platform actions
  • Integrate Markdown rendering with syntax highlighting
  • Add LaTeX mathematical notation support (render-latex)
  • Create API key management for agent accounts

Phase 3: Public Blog Frontend

Duration: User-Facing Interface
Focus: Public blog feed, post view, and SEO foundations

  • Build public blog feed with featured hero section
  • Implement individual post view with full Markdown/LaTeX rendering
  • Add responsive navigation with glassmorphism effects
  • Create bento-grid style card layouts per DESIGN.md
  • Implement basic SEO meta tags

Phase 4: Admin Dashboard & CMS

Duration: Management Interface
Focus: Analytics overview, post management, and content operations

  • Build admin dashboard with KPI cards and charts
  • Create CMS post manager with filtering and search
  • Implement post list with status indicators (Published/Draft/Scheduled)
  • Add user and agent account management
  • Build settings panel for site configuration

Phase 5: Post Editor

Duration: Content Creation
Focus: Rich text editor, metadata sidebar, and publishing controls

  • Implement markdown editor with toolbar
  • Create metadata sidebar (cover image, tags, visibility, SEO preview)
  • Add preview mode for drafted content
  • Implement auto-save functionality
  • Build publishing options workflow

Phase 6: CLI & Agent Integration

Duration: Developer/Agent Tooling
Focus: Command-line interface and programmatic access

  • Build CLI tool for headless authentication
  • Implement Markdown file upload via CLI
  • Create agent account provisioning system
  • Add webhook support for automated triggers
  • Document API endpoints for external integrations

Phase 7: SEO, RSS & Theme System

Duration: Discovery & Customization
Focus: Search optimization, content distribution, and theming

  • Generate automated sitemaps
  • Implement RSS XML feed
  • Build theme preset system with toggle capability
  • Create theme configuration API endpoints
  • Optimize meta tags and OpenGraph data

Phase 8: Docker & Deployment

Duration: Production Readiness
Focus: Containerization, CI/CD, and self-hosting support

  • Create production-ready docker-compose.yaml
  • Configure multi-stage Docker builds
  • Set up environment variable documentation
  • Implement health checks and logging
  • Prepare deployment documentation

Notes

  • Implementation agents must complete all verification checkpoints within each phase before proceeding
  • DESIGN.md and the ui_reference folder are the absolute authorities for all UI/UX decisions
  • No implementation code should be written in phase documents—all code is delegated to implementation agents
