streamline the way emitter handles writes

breaking spaces, optional spaces, line breaks, write guards, raw writes, controlled writes,
and (the currently-not-autonomously-implemented line-wrap) can (and must)
have a much simpler implementation.
They currently look like solutions that have been spit-stuck over previous spit-stuck ones.
