AI Coding & Developer Experience Landscape

Market Map for the DepthCheck Skill

IMPORTANT — Work/Personal Separation: This document is for personal/public use only. All examples use generic or personal project code. No proprietary code, architecture, or domain knowledge from any employer or client is referenced. DepthCheck will be developed, tested, and demonstrated exclusively against personal projects and public codebases.

Purpose: Map the AI coding assistant / developer experience / code explanation space to identify where a tiered narration layer (Green → Junior → Mid → Senior) fills a gap that nobody else is building.


1. The AI Coding Market in 2026

The AI-powered coding tools market was valued at roughly $4.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to exceed $30 billion by 2032, growing at a 27% CAGR. Investment is staggering: Anysphere (Cursor) reached a $29.3 billion valuation with $2.3 billion raised in a single round in late 2025, crossing $1 billion in annualized revenue. OpenAI acquired Windsurf (formerly Codeium) for approximately $3 billion. Cognition (Devin) raised $400 million. The market is white-hot and still growing.

The key shift in 2026 is the move from autocomplete to agentic workflows. Tools are no longer just suggesting the next line of code; they are navigating repositories, making multi-file changes, running tests, and iterating autonomously. The Pragmatic Engineer newsletter noted that Opus 4.5 and GPT-5.2 represented an inflection point where significantly harder coding problems became solvable by AI.

However, a critical gap remains: none of the major tools are focused on explaining what happened and why at different expertise levels. Every tool is optimized to produce code faster. Almost nobody is optimizing to help humans understand code better, which is exactly where the DepthCheck skill sits.


2. Competitive Landscape by Tier

Tier 1: The Giants (>$1B Valuation)

These are the dominant platforms. Your DepthCheck skill wouldn't compete with them; it would complement or plug into them.

Tier 2: Fast-Growing Challengers ($50M–$1B)

These companies are funded, scaling, and more likely to build or acquire niche features like tiered narration.

  • Augment Code — AI coding assistant focused on enterprise teams. Raised $252M. Deep codebase understanding. DepthCheck adds value for their onboarding story.
  • Windsurf (OpenAI) — Acquired by OpenAI for ~$3B. Was Codeium. AI-native IDE with agentic Cascade workflows. Integration opportunity through OpenAI's ecosystem.
  • Lovable — AI app builder for non-developers. Raised $25M+. Their entire audience needs code explained at a Green/Junior level.
  • Vercel (v0) — AI-powered UI generation with ShadCN. Well-funded. v0 generates code that developers then need to understand.
  • Builder.io — Visual AI IDE for product teams. Bridges design and engineering. Tiered narration would help non-engineers understand generated code.

Tier 3: The Explanation & Documentation Niche

This is the most directly relevant competitive space for DepthCheck. These are companies explicitly working on making code understandable.

  • DocuWriter.ai — AI-powered code documentation generator. Tiered pricing. Integrates into CI pipelines. Closest competitor conceptually, but generates docs rather than tiered narration summaries.
  • DOCKR — Generates visual diagrams and documentation from codebases. Webhook-triggered updates. Visual-first approach to code understanding.
  • Verbicode AI — Generates and updates docs from repos and OpenAPI specs with version diffs. Focus on keeping docs in sync, not explanation depth.
  • Mintlify / ReadMe / GitBook — Developer documentation platforms with AI features. They host and organize docs but don't do tiered explanation.
  • Onlook (YC) — Open-source visual code editor. Relevant because visual tools need textual explanation layers.
  • Manufact / mcp-use (YC S25) — Open source SDK for MCP Servers. Relevant as an integration path for DepthCheck.

3. The Gap DepthCheck Fills

After mapping 30+ companies in this space, a clear pattern emerges: everybody is optimizing to produce code faster, but almost nobody is optimizing to help humans understand code at their level. The few tools that offer explanation do it in a one-size-fits-all way.

What Exists Today

  • Copilot Chat / Cursor Chat: Ask a question, get an explanation. Single level of detail. No audience awareness. Reactive, not proactive.
  • Devin Summaries: Generates a summary of what it did. One level. Written for the developer who delegated the task.
  • DocuWriter / Verbicode: Generates documentation. Technical audience assumed. No tiering.
  • Replit Ghostwriter: Explains code inline for beginners. One level. Doesn't scale up to senior-level architectural summaries.

What Doesn't Exist (Where DepthCheck Lives)

  • Automatic, proactive generation of tiered narration after a coding session.
  • Green Level: "We added a way for users to get notified when an item they want goes on sale."
  • Junior Level: "Created a React component that subscribes to a product's price via a REST API and sends a toast notification when it drops below the user's target."
  • Mid Level: "Implemented PriceWatchService with Redis pub/sub for real-time price events, a notification queue with retry logic, and user preference storage via PostgreSQL."
  • Senior Level: "Decoupled price monitoring into an event-driven microservice with fan-out via SNS/SQS, enabling horizontal scaling independent of the product catalog. Chose eventual consistency over strong consistency to keep P99 latency under 200ms."
  • Same work session, four different audiences, automatically generated. Nobody does this.

4. Where Tiered Narration Is Useful

4a. Developer Onboarding

Companies like Harness and Sourcegraph are already selling "accelerate developer onboarding from months to hours." Windsurf claims 4–9x reduced onboarding time. But their approach is search and chat, not structured narration. A DepthCheck-style tool that takes a week of commits and produces Green-through-Senior summaries would let new hires understand a codebase at their own level.

4b. Engineering Communication

Engineering managers constantly translate technical work for stakeholders. Sprint reviews, board updates, investor communications, client-facing changelogs. DepthCheck's Green level is literally "explain this to a non-technical person." Today, engineers do this manually and badly. A tool that auto-generates stakeholder-appropriate summaries of technical work saves everyone time.

4c. Code Review & Pull Requests

PR descriptions are notoriously low-quality. A DepthCheck integration that generates tiered PR summaries would help reviewers at different seniority levels understand changes faster. This plugs directly into GitHub, GitLab, and Azure DevOps workflows.

4d. Education & Bootcamps

Coding bootcamps like General Assembly, Flatiron, Lambda School, and platforms like Codecademy and freeCodeCamp need to explain the same code to students at wildly different comprehension levels. A tiered narration layer would let them generate level-appropriate explanations automatically.

4e. Streaming & Content Creation

The original use case. Twitch coding streamers, YouTube tutorial creators, and technical blog writers who want to make their content accessible to mixed-skill audiences. Smaller market but high brand-building value and the perfect proving ground.

4f. Compliance & Audit Documentation

Regulated industries (insurance, healthcare, finance) need to document what code does for non-technical auditors. The Green level of DepthCheck is essentially audit-ready documentation.


5. Integration Paths for DepthCheck

The DepthCheck skill starts as a Claude Code skill (a markdown file). Here's how it could grow:

1. Claude Code Skill SKILL.md file in your repo. Claude reads it and follows narration rules. Open source on GitHub. Software Saturdays content.
2. MCP Server Standalone server that any MCP-compatible client can call. Accepts code diffs + level, returns narration. npm package. Works with Claude Code, Cursor, any MCP client.
3. GitHub Action / CI Plugin Runs on every PR. Auto-generates tiered summaries as PR comments. GitHub Marketplace. GitLab CI template.
4. API Service Hosted API. Teams send code changes, get back tiered narrations. Direct integration with developer tool platforms.

6. Software Saturday Stream Strategy

Given that DepthCheck is both a portfolio piece and stream content, here's the recommended build order:

  1. Stream 1: Architecture & Design (This Saturday) Walk chat through this market research. Show the gap. Design the SKILL.md structure live. Explain the four tiers and why they matter. Deliverable: The DepthCheck SKILL.md committed to your public Claude Skills repo.

  2. Stream 2: Build the Skill Use Claude Code to implement the skill. Test it against real code from your personal projects and public repos. Show the tiered output live. Iterate based on results.

  3. Stream 3: MCP Server Convert the skill into a standalone MCP server in TypeScript. Publish to npm.

  4. Stream 4: GitHub Action Integration Build a GitHub Action that calls the MCP server on PRs. Demo it on your own repos. Publish to GitHub Marketplace. This becomes a real product people can use.


7. Key Takeaway

The AI coding market is a $5B+ space with 27% annual growth. Every major player is focused on making AI produce code faster. Nobody is building the human-readable layer that helps different audiences understand the same work at their level. That's the gap. DepthCheck fills it with tiered explanation — the same code change narrated for stakeholders, junior devs, mid-level engineers, and senior architects. Build it publicly, stream the process, and package it as an MCP server.
