Freeze after using Easy Crafter

Once I've accessed and used Easy Crafter, the game seems to go into "server freeze" for a minute or so.

During this time, non-EC blocks, such as beds, chests, and furnace, don't respond when right-clicked. Additionally, all mobs freeze in place, and broken blocks don't drop anything during that time, although the block itself does disappear. Once the time period is up, everything happens at once, including the UI to the first block you clicked.

UPDATE: After a while of doing something else, I came back to the bench to see a long line of tabs on the right, repeating the available and search options over and over as they go down below the screen. Perhaps these issues are related?
