ESPHome front page revamp #148

Problem statement

The current ESPHome homepage is not up-to-date or aligned with the project goals, the target audience, or the look and feel of other OHF project websites or licensed hardware. Furthermore, the messaging is inconsistent and will become outdated once the ESPHome branding is complete.

With the Starter Kit product launch coming, we'd like to make some changes in the ESPHome website front page, to make sure it's ready for the experience we'd like to provide to existing users, and also welcoming the newcomers that we'd like to attract.

Scope & Boundaries

In scope

  • Hero section copy updates
  • Header image improvements, and replacing/improving other imagery and icons
  • Headings copy updates to make the content more approachable
  • Add a header nav bar with links to ensure the user's ability to navigate and accommodate upcoming hardware licensed products

Not in scope

  • Rebuilding the “Getting Started” section and turn it into a dedicated landing page which will handle mild education on the different install methods (and products)

Risks & open questions

  • We'd like to complete this work before the Starter Kit launch, to ensure we improve the UX for new users, whilst keeping returning users on-track.

Appetite

  • Medium, considering it'll require design, copywriting and webdev resources
