From the Console – The Return to Local Compute?

This week’s Newsletter dives into something that surprised even me:

I think I’ve circled back to preferring locally owned compute over a cloud-first approach.

That shift didn’t happen overnight. It was the result of several industry developments stacking on top of each other:

• Big Tech’s increasing involvement in political influence
• Renewed pushes toward fully cloud-hosted PCs
• Massive memory price spikes and hardware scarcity
• Ongoing consolidation of AI-scale compute in the hands of a few major players

When you zoom out and look at these trends together, a thought experiment starts to form:

If AI = power… and AI requires massive compute… and compute is consolidating…
what does that mean for independent operation and long-term choice?

Is the industry drifting toward a world where meaningful compute power lives almost exclusively inside a handful of hyperscalers?

And if so… what does that mean for SysAdmins, homelabbers, and organizations that value autonomy?
