I'm always frustrated when we keep loosing the 3D models of components in KiCAD.
It has happened in the GPAD project and in the Krake Project

A clear and concise description of what you want to happen.
I want to never loose 3D models.
I want never to loose the 3D models for parts in the built in libraries.
I want never to loose the 3D models we customer made. Most of these have been placed in the Parts subfolder of the project.
For one part (DB9 Female) Lee notced the following I could change from ${KICAD6_3DMODEL_DIR} to ${KICAD7_3DMODEL_DIR} in 3D part file path and the 3D render of the part still worked. Lee is using KICAD 7.0.5
Nagham found however using KiCAD 9.99 the DB9 Female part had no 3D model.

ON the KiCAD forum there is the following note: PCB Editor: lost all the 3D after update to 6.0.4

This user had problem after migration from KiCAD 5 to 6. OUR Krake is inherited from GPAD on which we migrated from 5 to 6 also.
