New Filters are not saved

When I move a message e.g. via Quick Folder Move into a folder, and create a new filter via the filter assistant, they are only saved during the open session of thunderbird.

When I close and reopen Thunderbird, the newly created filter is gone.

This is actually a serious issue. No error message or so.

is it going coming from a specific account / inbox? The inbox (or original server) where the email is moved from is used and the editable filterlist from that inbox folder is edited and saved. So this should be saved (by Thunderbird) in msgFilterRules.dat automatically after you clicked OK on the filters. Can you make sure you see the filter in the filter list after it was created? (I recommend to keep the default setting of "Display Filter List after filter Creation" enabled, so you can check.

As the scriptable functions of Thunderbird have no method to "save a filter" - i am completely relying on whatever the back end does when you click on [Ok] on the filter editor window.

The behaviour is shown from an IMAP account. It happens both, when I move the emails from the INBOX of that account as well as when I move a mail from a shared folder.

The (editable) Filterbox pops up (as it was until a couple of days ago), then save. The filter is shown. It works until you close Thunderbird, then the filter is gone.

It is easy to find, as I search the filter specifically in the filter field. Creation -> visible, close thunderbird and reopen -> gone.

I noticed this behaviour a few days ago but ignored it, as I thought I forgot to create the filter. However, when I get over several days emails from the same person and have to create the filter every day, I notice.

I will turn on "show filter list" after creation, as I turned it off (pretty annoying actually).

Can you do me a favor and check msgFilterRules.dat (or at least look at its timestamp) after you close the message filters window? It is not entirely clear to me when / whether Thunderbird does the actual saving of these files. It would be logical if it did it after message filters are closed. but maybe it does it when you close Thunderbird and something interferes? OR worse something restores the old msgFilterRules.dat when you close.

I will do a few tests with some IMAP test accounts to see, but I haven't seen this behavior. To see whether (and when) thunderbird saves any of these changes on your machine would be super helpful. You can find these in the ImapMail subfolders under your profile (just do a search for msgFilterRules).

Thundbird keeps this file open during a session. it is not written until Thunderbird closes.
It seems that the filters are saved when I show the filter list after creation. If I do not show the filter list, they are not saved after closure of Thunderbird

So my guess is that Thunderbird somehow remembers (from the list) whether the user makes any changes and then stores them when Thunderbird is closed. If you never open the list to do anything it probably thinks no changes were made?

Yes, I had because it disrupts my workflow. The filter list pops up, focus changes and I have to switch back to the main window. And IMHO it is completely useless to display the filter list after creation.
However, it seems as the filters are then not saved on close.

As a workaround, can you open the filters list once and edit something (e.g. just change order of one filter) before your close down Thunderbird? I think this should force Thunderbird to save the msgFilterRules.dat file. Sorry that I cannot cause this change programmatically at the moment.

I have the same problem.
Whenever i restart Thunderbird the filters i made that session are gone.
Not the entry in the list of filters themselves but their rules specifically.
The "if it comes from this address" -> "do this" - these are missing. The filter entry itself is still there.

do you see the filter editor at any time when you generate the filters or is it set to hide everything? Like I said before there is no specific API that saves the filter, and I do not know when Thunderbird chooses to save filters. If you can reproduce the problem, can you check whether msgFilterRules.dat gets saved after you close the filter editor?
