This is an issue starting with 1.44.0

Fixing this will result in the removal of support for MW 1.39.x and earlier versions.

Seeing that #123 was closed, wouldn't it be possible to create a separate REL1_39 branch and then require 1.43 on master? We're running this extension on Miraheze and have just upgraded to 1.44, and the extension is throwing errors on some wikis

#131 should fix this without breaking compatibility with 1.39. We've had a patch for this deployed for 1.5 months, so it would be great to get this fixed.
