There is no much information about his life. The information found in the scholarship is partial and relies
on the biographical material such as <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/10763905" key="lccn:n84228622" type="alt">Latifî</persName>’s <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc">Tezkiretü’ş-Şuarâ</title>
and <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/100190595" key="lccn:n80153170" type="alt">Mustafa Âli</persName>’s <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc">Künhü’l-Ahbâr</title>. Modern scholars agree that
he was born in <name type="place" key="lccn:n88104430">Bursa</name> around the mid fourteenth century and was
both, the son of <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="local:mid:398" type="supplied">Ahmed Paşa</persName>
and a descendant of <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="local:mid:399" type="supplied">Şeyh Mahmud</persName>
who in turn was the son of <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/63560561" key="lccn:no00093670" type="alt">Edebâli</persName>, author of a commentary on the <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc">Fusûsü’l-hikem</title>. Although the evidence is inconclusive, it has been suggested
that he could have been the preacher of the <name type="place" key="lccn:n2007228336">Grand Mosque</name> of
<name type="place" key="lccn:n88104430">Bursa</name> during the reign of <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/1467021" key="lccn:n85327215" type="alt">Bayezid I</persName>.
His actual dates of birth and death are unknown. Most biographies agree that <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/20493287" key="lccn:n84074770" type="alt">Süleyman Çelebi</persName> wrote the
<title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title>
after he listened a sermon and witnessed how the audience followed the misleading argument of the preacher.
The orator misspelled a Qur’anic verse regarding the prophets and announced that there is no difference
between <persName xml:lang="eng" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/143011742" key="lccn:n80109418" type="alt">Jesus</persName> and <persName xml:lang="eng" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/97245226/" key="lccn:n79130881" type="alt">prophet Muḥammad</persName>. Accordingly, <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/20493287" key="lccn:n84074770" type="alt">Süleyman Çelebi</persName> wrote his work
in order to reject these opinions and to declare the superiority of
the <persName xml:lang="eng" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/97245226/" key="lccn:n79130881" type="alt">prophet Muḥammad</persName> over all other prophets.

<note>Most of the existing scholarship regards <persName xml:lang="per-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/20493287" key="lccn:n84074770" type="alt">Sūlaymān Chalabī</persName>’s <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title> as the first Turkish example of
the genre of mevlid. It is the only work written by the author. It is in the mathnawi format and written in a
simple Turkish. One verse that appears in some of the copies of the text reveals that
<title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title> was
composed in <date calendar="Gregorian" when="1409">1409</date> when the author is sixty years old. <persName xml:lang="per-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/20493287" key="lccn:n84074770" type="alt">Sūlaymān Chalabī</persName> probably inspired from the earlier Arabic and Turkish siyar texts. In this respect,
<persName xml:lang="tur" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/79052313" key="lccn:n85808304" type="standard">Tahir Alangu</persName> finds similarities between the introductions to <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title> and <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/37305265" key="lccn:no2001070174" type="alt">Âşık Paşa</persName>’s mathnawi
<title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc">Garibnâme</title> (composed in <date calendar="Gregorian" when="1332">1332</date>).
Also, he draws attention to the similarities especially of the parts on the birth of the <persName xml:lang="eng" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/97245226/" key="lccn:n79130881" type="alt">prophet Muhammad</persName> in
<title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title>
with a siyar text translated by <persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/71505636" key="lccn:nr97006571" type="alt">Erzurumlu Mustafa Darîr bin Yusuf</persName> in <date calendar="Gregorian" when="1388">1388</date>. <persName xml:lang="eng" key="local:mid:400" type="supplied">F. Lyman MacCallum</persName>
divides the texts into nine sections: A song of invocation and praise to Allah; A brief request (always carefully
observed in recitals) for prayers for the author, “Süleyman the lowly”; A discourse on the “Light of Muhammad”,
or the prophetic succession; The birth of Muhammad; The “Merhaba”, a triumphant chorus of welcome to the new-born
Prophet; Further recital of the marvels attending the birth; The miracles of the Prophet; The “Miradj” or heavenly
journey of the prophet; Concluding confession and prayer. From the time it had been written until now,
<title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title>
has become one of the most popular siyar text. During the Ottoman period, especially after the reign of
<persName xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" ref="http://viaf.org/viaf/266879898" key="lccn:n88278439" type="alt">Murad III (r. 1574-1595)</persName> reading <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title> aloud became an important part of the mevlid celebrations
conducted by the palace. <title xml:lang="ota-Latn-x-lc" key="lccn:sh85081826 lccn:sh91004954 lccn:sh85068393">Vesîletü’n-Necât</title> has been read aloud in other occasions too, such as births, funerals and circumcision ceremonies.
