Copilot Assessment

You need to give the Renovate PAT write access to the lewee repo’s contents (and optionally security alerts), but you do not need anything broader than repo‑scoped permissions on that specific repository.

Because you’re using a fine-grained personal access token for a GitHub user (e.g. lewee-bot) that pushes to TheMagnificent11/lewee, configure the token like this:

1. Repository access

On the PAT creation/edit screen:

2. Repository permissions

Under Repository permissions, set:

Required for pushing branches and PRs:

• Contents: Read and write
  • This is what allows:
    • Cloning/fetching the repo
    • Creating branches
    • Committing and pushing to https://github.com/TheMagnificent11/lewee.git

If you want Renovate to use GitHub vulnerability alerts in its logic (per your issue text):

• Dependabot alerts and security updates (or “Vulnerability alerts”, the exact label varies by UI/state):
  • Set this to at least Read (or Read and write if you expect it to trigger security updates).

Optional but commonly useful, depending on your Renovate setup:

• Pull requests: Read and write
  • If Renovate is opening/closing/editing PRs directly via the API.
• Issues: Read and write
  • If you configure Renovate to create or comment on issues.
• Metadata: Read-only (usually automatically granted).

You do not need:

• Organization-wide admin or member privileges
• Codespaces, Actions, Packages, etc., unless your config explicitly uses them.

3. Use the token in the workflow

In your Actions workflow:

1. Save the fine-grained PAT as a repo secret, e.g. RENOVATE_TOKEN.
2. In the job where you run Renovate, set:

env:
  RENOVATE_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.RENOVATE_TOKEN }}
  # or GITHUB_TOKEN if you're using renovate's GITHUB_COM_TOKEN/GITHUB_TOKEN support

Make sure Renovate is configured to use that token (for self‑hosted this is usually via RENOVATE_TOKEN or GITHUB_COM_TOKEN).

4. Why you’re seeing 403

The error:

Permission to TheMagnificent11/lewee.git denied to lewee-bot.

means that lewee-bot’s PAT either:

• Doesn’t include lewee in its Repository access scope, or
• Has Contents set only to Read (or No access) for that repo.

Once you update the PAT to:

• Repo: lewee selected
• Contents: Read and write

and update the secret/token in your workflow if you regenerated it, pushes from Renovate should succeed.
