Are iso-8859-1 or utf-8 handled ?

First, thanks for having shared this lib!
My question is regarding iso-8859-1 or utf-8 management.
Is it somehow compatible ?

I'm using XPL4Linux together with PMaxd.
jsongetxplstate.c is not showing special characters (such as é, à, ...).
" || " is displayed instead.

this stuff is a decade old, didn't even know it was still around.

Frankly, since it has been so long, I do not know about the support for the character sets. I think it would be safest to just stick to old fashioned ASCII, and skip any multi-byte encodings.
