NameError: name 'clock' is not defined

When running in Visual Studio 2017 (Community and Enterprise) with
Python 3.6 (32bit or 64bit)
pygame 1.9.5
the "NameError: name 'clock' is not defined" error is displayed at runtime.

Save the file somewhere on your hard disk (for example, in the root of drive D) and launch it through the console using the following command:
pgzrun D:/intro.py

The first time I looked at this explosion code a few weeks ago I could not get it running, through google I found suggestions Kivy was required, It did not help, I had the same results as yourself.

I struggled with this for a while, then I found this video on youtube. from europython in Edinburgh 2018.

These are the steps I had to go through on my PC

1. Open command window
2. Use cd command to go to folder containing python file
3. Type "code ." then Enter. This will open the current directory in VSCode
4. In the VSCode terminal window type "py -m venv env" to create a python environment
   5.Then type "env\scripts\activate" + Enter to activate the environment
5. Then "pip install pgzero" + Enter to install pygame zero and dependencies.
6. Now you should be ready to run the code, type "pgzrun explosion.py" which should open a window and run the code.

Note that if your code is in a directory you will need to specify a relative path e.g.
pgzrun wireframe-1/explosion.py

This was my first successful experience with python in VSCode. I included the full steps because I am new to python and I do not know what level of a developer you are. If you need any further assistance let me know.

After saving the source code onto my PC (Windows) I did the following from the command line:

1. Created a virtual environment (which I named "virtual_WFMag")
2. Navigate to the virtual environment Scripts folder
3. Activate the virtual environment
4. Install pgzero
5. Navigate to folder where source file is saved and run using pgzero

commands:

1. py -3 -m venv virtual_WFMag
2. cd virtual_WFMag\Scripts
3. activate
4. pip install pgzero
5. pgzrun explosion.py

For me in Python 3.9

I just had to add as 3rd line of code

Import pgzrun

And add as last line of code

pgzrun.go()
