Claude Agent is not available

Claude Agent is not available (in IntelliJ) event though the Claude CLI is running:

Hello, at present, using Claude in IntelliJ requires either logging into a JetBrains account or setting up an Anthropic API key in the "Providers & API Keys" settings.

@ViktorBelenkiiJb well if I uninstall the Intellij Claude agent and install it back again, it works again, but then comes back to the ticket described state as soon as I create a new chat. It used to work fine for me 2 days ago. It seems to me that this is a problem?

2025.3.4 or later versions, acp does not work. Back to 2025.3.2 or 3.3

I ran the Claude CLI first, and then uninstalled and installed the Claude Agent ACP, and now I see the provider is Claude, models are correct but still, from the drop down, it is disabled and, when I communicate with it, it asks to authenticate!

This helped to have the Claude Code Agent enabled in the dropdown but asks for Log in; which is not ideal in my specific case; and I'm already logged in in the CLI so,...

Thanks, I had tried that before, having it in acp.json, /.claude/claude.json, .claude.json but didn't help. still doesn't ask for Log In but it times out; throws Failed to initialize ACP session. Error: Process cancelled.

My case is different; I'm using a custom claude executable. Neither ACP_PATH_TO_CLAUDE_CODE_EXECUTABLE nor CLAUDE_CODE_EXECUTABLE helped.

i think part of the problem is that jetbrains is using ${HOME}/.claude dir and it ends up clobbering claude logins through cli session, at least on on a mac. i checked keychain and there was only one entry. i was also clobbering my own cli session as well.

i started setting the CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR using cloak and now my cli sessions work properly between the two accounts and i think i am using the jetbrains subscription when i use the agent plugin now. it's possible jetbrains changed something in the latest release b/c now i only have two entries in the keychain

so maybe they are managing credentials differently now but it is definitely still using ${HOME}/.claude (i can delete it and then open intellij and it gets created again.

i just added the following to the acp.json file (i'd really prefer if i could scope this on a workspace level as i have multiple installs of intellij instead of across all instances but that's probably something to complain to jetbrains about).

and i think it's all routing properly. to test i checked memory across all 3 and they all report correct entries.

I think this problem is related to IDEA instead of claude-agent-acp

I did a little bit of extra research on how the current ACP login works and why it fails in JetBrains Rider (2026.1), when the user clicks on the Login button.

They are trying to use
npx --cli instead of npx <package> --cli

so creating a simple CMD/SH file with npx <package> %1 and using it as a command instead of npx with args solves the issue without changing the auth flag.

Test it first with disabled Jetbrains AI because in case of error credits will be used and remove comment from json
