Render artifacts: Amlogic s905y4 / Mali-g31

Hi, I'm having a rendering issue. The app works, but artifacts appear when the images are refreshed.

When I add a driver debug variable:
PAN_MESA_DEBUG=sync
Artifacts disappear, but performance drops significantly

SBC: Khadas vim1s

That's either a mesa or flutter bug :/ Not really sure what to do there either. Maybe you can open an issue in the mesa project? They probably want some way to reproduce, maybe record the OpenGL calls with apitrace.

You can try running with impeller, by adding a --enable-impeller arg after the path to the asset bundle, like:

flutter-pi .../asset-bundle --enable-impeller

Or try with vulkan:

flutter-pi --vulkan .../asset-bundle

This helps with artifacts, but slows down the application significantly

The problem persists with the --enable-impeller flag. It only introduced visual bugs (colors, animations)

How are you building the image? Is there a newer BSP / kernel / graphics driver version you can try? Maybe this is already fixed in a newer version, 5.15 is from 2021, so quite old

I'm using the build system from the SBC manufacturer.
Build system

Board: VIM1S

They only support 5.15 and only recently added mainline (7.0.0)
But there are issues with this version as well.

The display only works when AFBC is disabled
PAN_MESA_DEBUG=noafbc
Without this - display is flickering

And despite all that, performance is still poor

Maybe they have an issue with implicit sync.

AFBC should be left on if possible. Disabling framebuffer compression is really terrible for performance. Is the display also flickering if you have AFBC enabled and do the glFinish before eglSwapBuffers?

I also tried adding glFinish to flutter-pi, but it didn't fix the flickering at all.

However, the standard kmscube and glmark2-es2-drm don't flicker.

What happens if you do PAN_MESA_DEBUG=sync, but without noafbc (with all the kmscube variants, so mainline with -A, mainline without -A and forked with -A)? Does the flickering stop? (You don't need to report the output, just what happens on screen)

I apologize; perhaps we didn't quite understand each other.

kmscube runs without flickering right out of the box. This applies to both the mainline version and the fork with the --atomic flag.
They do not require setting the PAN_MESA_DEBUG=noafbc parameter.
glmark2-es2-drm also works fine, without flickering.

IMO, I think it's relatively unlikely that this is a flutter-pi bug. I think it's more likely that the issues just don't ocurr with kmscube because it's so quick / simple to render.

For example, if this is a synchronization issue, i.e. display controller does not correctly wait for GPU to finish its work, and presents the framebuffer before rendering is done (which could result in black screen or artifacts): It's completely possible this doesn't happen with kmscube, because rendering is done so quickly that the display controller never has to wait for the GPU.

Not sure what's a good way to verify this hypothesis. Maybe there's another test program that's more graphically expensive. Or you add some expensive shader to kmscube. Or you use some tool like apitrace to record the flutter OpenGL calls and use that to reproduce. But I think you should report this to mesa / the display driver authors / your vendor.

I can prepare a branch for you that uses explicit sync, maybe on the weekend. Could be implicit sync is buggy with your driver, but explicit isn't. (My kmscube fork uses implicit, mainline kmscube with -A uses explicit, without -A implicit) But I'm not sure it'll help

Yeah, it looks like the problem is somewhere in Mesa or DRM.
