(feature request) add a default profile attribute.

For my use on my laptop, I usually want to have a flat response for all headphones, HDMI or whatever external system I attach to them (by the way - this may be interesting - is the current auto profile switching code respecting the port? Because when I use the normal audio-out from the laptop sound card, I also do not want it to switch to the heavily correct speaker output...).

So it would be extremely helpful if I could save a "neutral" profile, and make it the default, and only have it switch to effectively being active when the speakers are being used (or some other random bad headphone that may need correcttion). All other output paths would by default fall back to this default profile.

As an added bonus - if the profile would also save the state of the "being active" setting, we could maybe even spare a few cycles by routing around the whole processing path. Of course this wouldn't work if your personal preferences of a default is different from neutral (say you like a bit of added low end all the time), but for the neutral flat response case it could be a nice addon.

Thanks, this is a very useful direction.

The current output-preset switching is based on the PipeWire/WirePlumber node identity, so it does not yet fully distinguish ports such as laptop speakers vs headphones on the same sound card. I agree that a default/fallback preset plus port-aware matching would make this workflow much better.

I investigated the port-aware route data and found a WirePlumber introspection issue that affects reading those route properties safely from Python. I opened an upstream WirePlumber issue/MR for that:

Once that is resolved, or once Mini EQ has a safe compatibility path, I’d like to add this in a future release: a default preset fallback, with specific overrides for outputs/ports that need correction.

This is now merged upstream but I need to wait for the next Wireplumber release.

Mini EQ 0.5.0 now includes the first part of this workflow.

There is a new Default Preset fallback: when an output has no linked preset, Mini EQ can fall back to the configured default preset instead of accidentally carrying over an auto-applied correction from the previous output. Manual preset choices and unsaved edits are preserved, so the app should be less surprising when switching outputs.

This should cover the common “use neutral/default unless this output has its own correction” case.

There are still two parts I would keep open for follow-up:

• Port-aware matching, for cases like laptop speakers vs headphones on the same sound card. This depends on using the newer WirePlumber route data safely from Mini EQ, The relevant upstream fix has landed, but I still need to wait for it to be available in a WirePlumber release before depending on it.
• Saving/restoring the “active” routing state as part of a default profile, so a truly neutral default could bypass the EQ path.

So I’ll keep this issue open for now, but 0.5.0 should already make this workflow much more usable.

Very cool, can't wait to try it out when I am back at my laptop.
I am really happy that finally someone took it on himself to bring this basic feature in a usable form to the users - I have been using easy effects for years now, and it is a really capable tool, but it is just too complicated that this would ever be usable for "normal" people. Mini-eq should and does go the way of having a really user friendly tool for the 99% case
