Sometimes edits in the column dont save, unless the user clicks into the parent column first.

EditorJS blocks use contenteditable divs. The currently focused block doesn't always flush its latest content to the internal state until it loses focus. When the parent editor calls save() on the columns tool, it calls save() on each child EditorJS instance — but the actively-focused child block may not have committed its content yet.
That's why clicking into the parent first "fixes" it — it triggers a blur on the child, which flushes the content.

The fix is simple — force a blur before saving the child editors

The fix is a small addition at the top of the save() method:

It checks whether the currently focused element is inside the column wrapper, and if so, blurs it before iterating through the child editors. This forces the contenteditable block to flush its content, so save() picks up the latest text.
