The ZEISS Vision Care Order Fulfillment architecture is a cloud-native platform engineering solution designed to reliably process complex, unstructured documents in optical manufacturing. Faced with the challenge of extracting structured optical parameters from highly variable, multi-lingual documents containing diverse layouts and handwriting, ZEISS implemented a resilient, microservices-based approach using Dapr Agents. By leveraging this vendor-neutral framework, their architecture seamlessly orchestrates deterministic workflows that combine specialized optical character recognition (OCR), large language models (LLMs), and standard code. This setup not only ensures reliable execution, failure recovery, and state management but also provides the flexibility to easily swap AI providers, ultimately allowing ZEISS to accelerate their time to market from concept to production in just two months.
