Updated examples and tests

@sekur after the high expectations set by the contents of the readme and doc files I jumped right to the code to give kos a try. Unfortunately the examples are not working and there are no tests to try to understand how things work.

It would be great to have up to date examples. I would be happy to lend a hand if I had at least one up to date example as guidance.

Hi @bermi thanks for your willingness to give this a try and to lend a hand in making the docs usable (once again).

I've diverged the codebase significantly since the initial docs were written and have been very lazy about going back and updating the examples (and adding proper test cases as well).

It is currently used in production so no worries there but I can definitely use some help in improving the docs for public use!

I'll share an example use later today and we can iterate from there.
