Mathcat for french (translate)

Hello
I am French.
This is my first time connecting to GitHub.
I am not a developer but a system administrator.
I work in a foundation for blind and visually impaired children in France,
and we use NVDA.
I would like to work on translating MathCAT into French.
How much time will this project take?
What are the steps to accomplish it?

@dommcanoss68-svg: there are a few other people interested in doing a French translation. I've asked them to coordinate via this issue.

When someone is ready to being working on the translation, let me know and I will seed a translation and put it in a "fr" branch. There are existing translation for MathPlayer and SRE, so I think that will get the project off to a good start, at least in terms of common mathematical characters found in MathCAT's unicode.yaml file. Information for translators can be found here.

I am interested in French MathCAT translation but do not have so much time for now.

I am an NVDA add-on author, NVDA contributor (dev and translator) and had translated Access8Math a few years ago. I have no experience at all with math braille and use mainly speech as access medium. I am used to working with Git and GitHub.

I cannot take the lead on this task to coordinate interested people or push it forward for now. Though, I may provide assistance or contribute to some parts.

I'm part of a French project team working on how to make the best use of MathCAT for French people. Our project team is willing to work on participating on how to translate MathCAT in French, please let us know how to proceed.

The repository was recently moved into the DAISY organization, and some of the links still need to be updated. I'm interested to be in the loop as you work on this translation - I'd like to help with the documentation for new contributors, and it would be very helpful to hear how this goes for you.

Also, you might want to join this mailing group. DAISY initiated a working group this year that meets bi-weekly. Meetings are announced through the mailing list. I believe the next one will be on March 11th at 16:00 UTC.

As @rileeki wrote, the next MathCAT working group meeting will be on Wednesday, March 11, from 16 to 17 UTC. Join the mailing list to get the meeting invitation.

In the working group meetings, we discuss acitivites and issues related to MathCAT.

In the working group, there are people who have translated MathCAT and who would like to support others working on a translation. An important part of improving MathCAT is to get more translations. There has also been made a tool that compares the English files with translated files to identify differences between the languages. I too have some experience with NVDA and add-ons development, as well as some basic knowledge concerning braille.

I have created a "fr" branch with an initial seeding for the French translation. There are some tests that are AI generated that all pass, but that doesn't mean the translations are good -- if AI thought that "<" should be "plus petite", the expected test string would likely have the same translation.

See new_translators_guide_MathCAT.md for guidance for what to do next.
This morning, @MartheGjelstad volunteered to be on a call to help you get started.

Please remember that you can do much more than just translate the words. If there is a different way of speaking something or something has a special case, that can be added to the French translation by adding a rule for that.

@CyrilleB79 I have forked the repo here and started the work on the fr branch. So far I am working on the SharedRules. As per the translators user guide, I am working on bringing in the missing rules and doing a first translation pass.

I notice the ClearSpeak_Rules.yaml is currently missing on the branch. Anyway, let me know if we should schedule a meeting and maybe @MartheGjelstad could help us get started on the right track

This is the first time we used AI to help generate a translation. So we were a bit cautious. Between that not wanting to overwhelm you, we left out ClearSpeak. That means there is less for you to do as a start, not just for the rules, but also for tests.

If you want we can add that file in.
