Fails to build: no build.zig file found

I tried adding the package using doom: (package! ghostel). I then tried to do a source build (just for fun really; I'm on an Apple Silicon MacBook) but got the following error 🤔

I assume you installed via melpa?
There is already an issue for it: #42
The build files are not included in the melpa receipt (yet).
So if you want to build from source you have to clone this repo or intall via package-vc-install (or some other package manager).

Yeah, I think that's probably what happened. Doom uses straight for better reproducibility, and MELPA is one of the sources it pulls from. I noticed that issue but didn't connect the two.

I was about to try a direct vc install but also noticed this issue: #118. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes.

yeah, sorry. Emacs packaging is hard :D
Personally I use borg which just uses git-submodules so I didn't have any of those issues.
I'll restructure today and then hopefully melpa will merge the fix "soon".

So, jumping back from the terminfo thread... I added a few more files from VC explicitly and got past the first error. But I'm hitting something that seems unrelated. Here's the compile error log in full. As mentioned, I'm on Apple Silicon, and just installed zig from homebrew (seems to be version 0.16.0).

This isn't a super high priority issue; I do have binaries available on my main platform. But I'd prefer to keep my emacs config usable everywhere, including on FreeBSD and OpenBSD so being able to build from source would be ideal.

That's because zig just recently released version 0.16 and ghostty itself doesn't support it yet.
So you need 0.15.2.

brew uninstall zig
brew install zig@0.15

should do the trick (if you're on mac.)

Oh heh 😅 That does indeed seem to be the issue! I guess that's the fun of a pre-1.0 language.

I'm going to close this now since it seems the root causes are already tracked elsewhere. Hope this helps others in the meantime.

@dakra Could you maybe add the required zig version to the README file or maybe even make the compile function emit a warning if the wrong zig version is installed?

@fapdash right. we had that problem a few times because some systems have a too old version but a lot have now 0.16 as default zig install.

I made a change in cdd8dc5 so now you get a nicer and clear error message if compilation fails and also highlighted the exact version requirement in the readme a bit more.
