The edit pane can only save-and-exit.
Ironically and non-intuitively this is bound to the Esc(ape) key.
There needs to be also an abort/exit-without-saving since sometimes changes/edits made need to be easily abandoned.
(this lack is exaggerated by the current lack of editing ability in the edit pane)...
