A coordinator of a PAN may use a superframe structure. A superframe is bounded by the transmission of a Beacon frame and may have an active portion and an inactive portion.
The 2024 version of the standard specifies, in Section 10.2, the different concepts to implement in order to support such networks :
- Contention access period (CAP)
- Contention-free period (CFP)
- Beacon only period (BOP)
Superstructure-based network use slotted version of CSMA/CA that also need to be implemented.
In order to start a PAN using a superframe structure, the 'MLME-START-SUPERFRAME.request' procedure needs to be implemented.
