This function is only used by OrderedList.parseMarkdown, not by ListItem.parseMarkdown. The ListItem.parseMarkdown handler (lines 59-117 of list-item.ts) has its own parsing logic that may produce content where the paragraph or subsequent orderedList node doesn't conform to the schema expectations.

Specifically, when hasParagraphTokens is false and the first token is a text token, the ListItem.parseMarkdown creates a paragraph manually and then appends any remaining tokens via helpers.parseChildren(). If the remaining tokens include a list token, this can produce [paragraph, orderedList] — which should be valid per the schema, but the paragraph content itself may be malformed (e.g., containing inline nodes that don't match paragraph's expected content spec).

Possible Version Mismatch

App v1.0.13 uses @tiptap/markdown@3.17.1 (pinned) with @tiptap/extension-list@3.19.0. There may be an incompatibility between how the older @tiptap/markdown tokenizes list content and how the newer @tiptap/extension-list parseMarkdown handler expects it. The recent commit 54ee369b2 ("pin @tiptap/extension-paragraph to 3.17.1 and unpin @tiptap/markdown") changed the markdown version — the current main has @tiptap/markdown@3.20.1.

Suggested Approaches

1. Add schema validation before setting editor content: The md2json() function already has a try/catch that falls back to a plain paragraph, but the parseJsonContent() function doesn't validate against the schema. Using validateJsonContent() from schema-validation.ts in the content loading path would catch these errors before they reach the editor.

2. Wrap nodeFromJSON in the editor init: In packages/tiptap/src/editor/index.tsx, the isValidTiptapContent() check only verifies the JSON structure (type === "doc" and content is array), but doesn't validate against the ProseMirror schema. Adding schema validation there would provide a safety net.

3. Investigate the @tiptap/markdown version: Upgrading from 3.17.1 to 3.19.0+ (matching the other tiptap packages) may fix the tokenization that leads to this invalid structure. The version was previously pinned due to a different issue.

4. Add a sanitization step in md2json(): Similar to the existing sanitizeMarks() function, add a sanitizeListItems() that ensures every listItem node starts with a valid paragraph node.
