MacOS binary appears to be damaged

Downloading the current MacOS package, unzipping it and running it on Sequoia.

The system tells me that the app is damaged, and tells me to delete it.
Is this happening to anyone else?

Generally it occurs when applications are either self-signed, are not signed at all, or there is corruption involved with the application's signature. In most cases such as a project on GitHub, it's safe(ish) to disable. You could be extra cautious and run the application in a VM if you wish, but that's a bit of overkill.

Assuming you trust the application, the quick and dirty way to get it running is to remove the protection, which can be accomplished by a simple terminal command.

Here's a quick overview of the steps to take:

• extract the archive and leave the Finder window showing the application open and visible.
• open Terminal.app (or your preferred terminal application if you have one).
• at a new prompt, enter the following command, followed by a space and don't hit return yet:
  • xattr -d com.apple.quarantine
• drag the application from the Finder window to the end of the line in Terminal.app after the space.
  • you will see the path and application name appear after your command in the Terminal window & can now hit enter.
  • example command:$ xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Users/brickpop/Downloads/shotgun-code
• after hitting enter, there will be no output from the command, but the prompt will return on a new line.
• as long as there aren't any errors, the application is now ready to run.
• 2x click shotgun-code.app and it will launch.
• profit!

If there is an error, it will be permissions related. if that is the case, use the sudo command to run the command as root.

• at the new prompt enter: sudo xattr -d com.apple.quarantine (note the space at the end) and drag the application from Finder.app on top of Terminal.app and hit return.
• you will then be prompted for your account password, which you will enter without seeing any feedback on screen.
• After typing your password, hit the enter key to execute the command with elevated permissions.
• 🎉
