Soft hyphens mess up kerning and are ignored

Text with soft hyphens (­) have two issues:

• The letter pair surrounding the hyphen aren't identified (e.g. pt in p­t)
• The soft hyphens no longer breaks the word, probably due to the browser not identifying the "string" with html as a single word (i.e. word)
