Possessing

Possessing is the act of binding a Controller to a Pawn. The Controller can be either a Player Controller or a AIController.

At game startup the Player Controller will automatically possess the a Pawn. If there is a Pawn in the level with Details Panel > Pawn > Auto Possess Player set to anything other than Disabled then that Pawn is possessed. If there is no such Pawn then an instance of the Pawn type set to Default Pawn Class in the active Game Mode.
