Status update: partially resolved / environment-dependent.

Recent modernization (hddserial@2.0.0+) improved cross-platform reliability, and we validated runtime behavior in CI and on Ubuntu 24.04 in Proxmox VM.

However, whether a real disk serial is available in VMs still depends on hypervisor/device exposure and permissions. In some virtualized setups, no real serial is exposed by the OS.

Keeping this issue open to track VM-specific edge cases. If you can share hypervisor/storage config and current output, we can document or narrow down behavior further.

Closing as environment limitation.

To summarize: hddserial@2.0.0+ works correctly in real hardware environments. Virtual machines may or may not expose real disk serials depending on:

• Hypervisor configuration (VMware, VirtualBox, Proxmox, etc.)
• Storage controller emulation type
• Whether the VM uses passthrough disks or virtual disks

This is expected behavior, not a bug. The package correctly returns what the OS exposes—if a VM doesn't provide a serial, that's an environment constraint.

If you need disk serials in a VM, check your hypervisor's documentation for disk passthrough or SCSI/SATA controller settings that may expose hardware identifiers.
