GSoC Applicant – Interested in Tag Clean Up Project

Hi, I’m a GSoC applicant interested in the Tag Clean Up project.

I am still learning and relatively new to this area, but I have started exploring the book records and understanding how tags are currently structured. I noticed some issues like duplicate and inconsistent tags.

I am very interested in contributing and learning through this project. Could you please guide me on how I can get started or suggest any beginner-friendly tasks?

Start by cloning the repo and setting up the development environment per the README. Run make dev to get the stack running locally. Explore the tag model in olapp/models.py and the tagging logic in olapp/views/tags.py. Look for existing issues tagged “tag-cleanup” - many list concrete duplicate‑tag examples. A good first task is to write a small management command that scans Book records for tags differing only by case or whitespace and logs them; put it in olib/scripts/. Run the test suite with make test to ensure nothing breaks. Once you have a working script, open a draft PR and ask for feedback on the approach. Iterate from there.
