[GSoC Project Proposal]: ERDDAP additional file formats

Project Description

Support for file formats is critical to ERDDAP™. The top priority for this project is to fully support Zarr v3 with both read and write support.

This could be made a large project by also adding support for writing NetCDF v4.

Expected Outcomes

ERDDAP™ is able to interact with Zarr v3 files.

For those interested, to make sure you're informed. The selections for organizations for GSoC have not happened yet. It's recommended to wait until we know we will be a selected org for GSoC to work on these projects. At this moment we are just building the idea pages.

Hello @ChrisJohnNOAA @ocefpaf @7yl4r @mwengren @MathewBiddle Congratulations on getting accepted as a GSoC 2026 Organization. I am interested in working on this ERDDAP Project, but I am not sure if this project is still active since I couldn't find it listed on the official ideas page. Please let me know if it is, and what would be a good place to start.

If you're interested in contributing to ERDDAP outside of GSoC, we always welcome contributions. The best place to get involved is the GitHub https://github.com/ERDDAP/erddap

If you're interested in a future GSoC with ERDDAP, I'm hoping we'll have projects and mentor(s) available in 2027.
