Keyboard shortcuts not working in opensuse package install on Ubuntu 24.04

when I launch VMPC2000 via terminal the shortcuts work as expected, but when I launch it via albert or the application menu the shortcuts don´t work. Funny enough pressing shift and hovering over a button still works, i.e. the shortcut tooltip appears.

I made this .desktop file:
~/.local/share/applications/vmpc2000xl.desktop

I had two versions of VMPC2000XL installed:

/usr/local/bin/VMPC2000XL   # from a manual install, Version: 0.9.12, Built: Sat, 06 Jun 2026 07:59:21
/usr/bin/vmpc2000xl         # from an OpenSuse package install, Version: 0.9.13, Built: Tue, 09 Jun 2026 00:23:46

The .desktop file referenced the OpenSuse package install and there the keyboard shortcuts don't work. (besides complaining about JACK not being started)

When I started the app from the command-line, I accidentally started the manual installed version (notice the capitalization of the binary-name) and there all works fine.

So it is NOT a problem between started by .desktop file or started by command-line.
It seems to be a problem with the version 0.9.13!

I haven't published v0.9.13 yet. The latest version in the channels that I maintain and that I'm aware of is v0.9.12.

How did you install v0.9.13?

I've got it from the multimedia:proaudio project:
https://software.opensuse.org//download.html?project=multimedia%3Aproaudio&package=vmpc2000xl (the xUbuntu 24.04 flavor). You recommend this package in the docs.

Despite being labeld as vmpc2000xl_0.9.12+git.1.532c3f9.orig.tar.gz after installation the info/about window reports it as

Version: 0.9.13
Format: Standalone
Built: Tue, 09 Jun 2026 00:23:46

Note also that the binary is named vmpc2000xl (all lowercase) and gets installed into /usr/bin in contrast with the manual installation which is labeld VMPC2000XL (all uppercase) and lives in /usr/local/bin (at least you recommend it)

Little bit off topic: I am currently evaluating the feasibility of a hardware-project using VMPC2000XL. There is no forum/Discord/whatever to discuss something like this - what is your preferred way of communication?

Interesting thing, the version discrepancy. I've asked the package maintainer to take a look.

Regarding the keyboard issue, did you try resetting the keyboard shortcuts to defaults? You should be able to do that via the UI with just the mouse: click the keyboard icon, click F5 to reset, click F5 to confirm. Alternatively you can dig into keyboard_bindings.json if you have one: https://vmpcdocs.izmar.nl/install.html#file-locations. Either rename it to .bk or look inside it if you see suspicious data.

Moreover, I see that https://build.opensuse.org/package/show/multimedia:proaudio/vmpc2000xl mentions juce-raw-keyboard-input-module-git.main.tar.xz, even though it's supposed to use non-main branch external-focus-provider. So I'm not sure if main is actually used. If yes, that's even more confusing, because I'd expect build errors.

Long story short, it seems there might be some issues with the latest OpenSUSE packages, and I'm talking to the maintainer about this.

Until then, if my instructions above don't resolve the keyboard situation, I'd recommend to use the binaries published on www.izmar.nl, https://github.com/izzyreal/vmpc-juce/releases, or build your own.

Yes, there seems to be a problem with the OpenSUSE package - I ditched it completely and now use your own build (where everything is fine so far). So concerning me, this issue could be closed.

OBS packages should be fixed now.

• The source is grabbed by git tag, not from the master branch, so the versions will be equal.
• deb package binary is uppercase as it is everywhere
• keyboard input is fixed by removing old LV2 build workaround
