Invalid signature for user or client 'test'

Using php-chef with Laravel 5.1. The authentication doesn't go through, it creates a signature but it throws an error:
Exception in Chef.php line 187:
Invalid signature for user or client 'test'

I am using Chef version 12.4.1

I had to set the enterprise variable to false, which is weird because we host our own.
