<h1><strong>Biography</strong></h1>
</header>
<p>I am the Lead for SickKids Hospital’s new Data Science Core and a PhD student in Computer Science at University of Toronto under the supervision of Anna Goldenberg.</p><p>Previously I completed a MSc in Computer Science and a MSc in Biostatistics at University of Toronto under the supervision of Anna Goldenberg and Lisa Strug, respectively. My research is focused on developing and applying statistical machine learning methods primarily for data integration and improved translational discovery in the areas of population genetics, genome biology, and complex disease. I also teach R programming and data analysis at SickKids using custom courseware developed with Ellen van der Plas and am an instructor for multiple Canadian Bioinformatics Workshops.</p><p>Outside of teaching, research, and my work in the Data Science Core, I enjoy volunteering with the Geneva Centre for Autism.</p>

<h3>Modes of Gene Expression Regulation</h3>
<p>Gene expression is regulated by a compendium of direct and indirect effects from multiple different regulatory bodies in the cell. My work in this area has focused on isolating shared and independent effects of different regulators for the purpose of experimental hypothesis generation, clustering of genes by regulatory signatures, and comparison of regulation across tissues and disease.</p>

<h3>Psychiatric Genetics</h3>
<p>Our understanding of the genetics and pathophysiology of many psychiatric disorders is still in its nascency. This is primarily due to (1) the polygenic nature of most psychiatric disorders, (2) difficulty studying the brain in a controlled manner, and (3) heterogeneity of the symptomatology and deficits that individuals with psychiatric disorders face. My work in this area targets all three of these areas by studying the group effects of genetic variants annotated to putative causal pathways and incorporating deep phenotyping into analyses of neuroimaging and genetics data. The disorders I primarily focus on are obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).</p>

<h3>Disentangling Complex Disease</h3>
<p>The diagnostic criteria for many disorders groups a heterogenous set of patients under a singular label. This makes studying the genetics, pathophysiology, and treatment response of those patients challenging. My work in this area focuses on integrating data from a multitude of different data types relevant to the disease under investigation in order to identify more homogenous subtypes of individuals within the same or a similar disease group.</p>
