title = {The Active Optics System on the Vera C. Rubin Observatory: Optimal Control of Degeneracy among the Large Number of Degrees of Freedom},
journal = {The Astrophysical Journal},
abstract = {The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a unique facility for survey astronomy that will soon be commissioned and begin operations. Crucial to many of its scientific goals is the achievement of sustained high image quality, limited only by the seeing at the site. This will be maintained through an active optics system that controls optical element misalignments and corrects mirror figure error to minimize aberrations caused by both thermal and gravitational effects. However, the large number of adjustment degrees of freedom available on the Rubin Observatory introduces a range of degeneracies, including many that are induced by noise due to imperfect measurement of the wave-front errors. We present a structured methodology for identifying these degeneracies through an analysis of image noise level. We also present a novel scaling strategy based on truncated singular value decomposition that mitigates the degeneracy and optimally distributes the adjustment over the available degrees of freedom. Our approach ensures the attainment of optimal image quality, while avoiding excursions around the noise-induced subspace of degeneracies, marking a significant improvement over the previous techniques adopted for Rubin, which were based on an optimal integral controller. This new approach is likely to also yield significant benefits for all telescopes that incorporate large numbers of degrees of freedom of adjustment.}

journal = {The Astronomical Journal},
abstract = {How ground-based telescopes schedule their observations in response to different variables can significantly impact their efficiency. Namely, competing science priorities and constraints, variations in the weather, and the visibility of a particular part of the sky are some of the determining variables. In this paper we introduce the Feature-based telescope scheduler, which is an automated, decision-making algorithm. It offers controllability of the behavior, adjustability of the mission, and quick recoverability from interruptions for large ground-based telescopes. By framing the Feature-based telescope scheduler in the context of a coherent mathematical model, the functionality and performance of the algorithm are simple to interpret. Consequently, adapting this scheduler for a broad range of ground-based instruments is straightforward. This paper presents a generic version of the Feature-based scheduler, with minimal manual tailoring. We demonstrate its potential and flexibility to serve as a foundation for schedulers of the ground-based instruments. In addition, a modified version of the Feature-based scheduler for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is introduced and compared to the previous LSST schedulers.}

journal = {Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific},
abstract = {The “brighter-fatter” (BF) effect is a phenomenon—originally discovered in charge coupled devices—in which the size of the detector point-spread function (PSF) increases with brightness. We present, for the first time, laboratory measurements demonstrating the existence of the effect in a Hawaii-2RG HgCdTe near-infrared (NIR) detector. We use JPL’s Precision Projector Laboratory, a facility for emulating astronomical observations with UV/VIS/NIR detectors, to project about 17,000 point sources onto the detector to stimulate the effect. After calibrating the detector for nonlinearity with flat-fields, we find evidence that charge is nonlinearly shifted from bright pixels to neighboring pixels during exposures of point sources, consistent with the existence of a BF-type effect. NASAs Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) will use similar detectors to measure weak gravitational lensing from the shapes of hundreds of million of galaxies in the NIR. The WFIRST PSF size must be calibrated to ≈0.1% to avoid biased inferences of dark matter and dark energy parameters; therefore further study and calibration of the BF effect in realistic images will be crucial.}
