Missing icons in gFTP 2.9.1b on Suse Tumbleweed

I was able to compile the latest version with meson build.

Works as expected except : the icons are missing after that ninja -C build install.

Any pointers how to get the icons back?

Edit: after fooling around with
Settings -> Appearance : Icon themes
the upper left and right icons are there but the left/right arrows are still missing.
Does anybody know on which icon theme gftp relies on?

This looks like:

in my case: the directory icons are missing.

VirtualBox, Videos, Thunderbird, Templates are directories.

Did you find them @gursuj ?

I tried once more with the icon themes, even with oxygen theme, but this did not help.

I am getting icons for directories.

These seem to be coming from the Tango theme that I installed. Looking closely, seems its a bit different than the Tango icons. Still, could you try installing that? Seems you don't need to even specify it as the icon theme. Even if I change the icon theme, it doesn't change the icons for files and folders.

Also, if you want a dark theme, yaru works well with this, apart from some text constrast issues.

Seems they let you set the icons for filetypes manually in the config, which could be a last resort.

	gFTP has the ability to use mime types. Some mime types come pre-configured
	with gFTP and you have complete control to configure the gFTP mime types any way
	that you want.
	Towards the bottom of the config file (/home/user/.gftp/gftprc), there is a
	section that has some ext= lines. Here you can control via a file extension,
	the icon in the listbox for it, the default transfer method (ascii or binary),
	and a default view/edit program. For example, let's take the line:
	ext=.xcf:gimp.xpm:B:gimp
	The first token, .xcf, is the file extension. The next token, gimp.xpm, is
	the default icon to use in the listboxes. You don't have to specify one if
	you don't want to. By default, gFTP will search ~/.gftp, $(PREFIX)/share/gftp
	(where prefix is your installation prefix), and then /usr/share/icons in that
	order. The files must be valid xpm files. The next token, B, specifies
	whether or not to transfer a file as Binary or Ascii. If you want to have

I have .xpm icons in /usr/share/gftp/, which seems to be why changing the icon theme didn't change those icons haha. Note this part of the docs:

$(PREFIX)/share/gftp (where prefix is your installation prefix)

On Suse Tumbleweed the xmp icons are in /usr/local/share/gftp/
I tried to switch the themes, copied the xpms to /usr/share/gftp/ as there is:
path2 = g_strconcat ("/usr/share/gftp/", filename, NULL);
in char * get_image_path () but this also does not work.

Still no directory icons in the list. :-(
Filezilla is a bit too overloaded in my opinion.
gftprc did not help.

"Open Location..." seems to have a different directory icon, that is working in the menu.

I was also trying out a bunch of linux FTP GUI clients. Settled on this for now. There's Muon-SSH but I kept having issues connecting. You could try termscp too or check out this list

Muon would have been my next try.

But now the Tumbleweed gods made an update for Suse Tumbleweed 20260202-0 -> 20260209-0
and there the icons are back again.
So it was not only an error on my side.
The previous update made gkrellm crash and "20260202-0 -> 20260209-0" also corrects this.

Nice to hear. Seems Muon doesn't support FTP at all (assumed so because I saw ftp support being mentioned on alternativeto) so that would've been another headache for you.
