fails with "Error in MD5 checksums" when dd isn't available

I was running one of gog.com installers (they are all created with makeself it looks like) in an env where dd wasn't available. The installer then swallows the "dd: command not found" and finally reports "Error in MD5 checksums".

Not sure if this is a supported case.

Well it is true that we had to deal with different variants of dd being available, but I've never heard of an environment where the command is just not available. It's a very basic command that we rely on pretty extensively to parse the archives. We could add a check and fail with an error if it is not available though.

This may or may not be completely unrelated to dd issues... on the pre-release Ubuntu 25.10, the vmware guest additions, which for Linux are delivered as a makeself archive, are taking this checksum error. Perhaps coincidentally, or not, dd and md5sum in this release are both present, but both are from the new Rust rewrite of coreutils, which ubuntu is currently packaging as coreutils-from-uutils. The new versions don't seem to be doing anything unexpected, just thought I'd drop a note here that there's investigation ongoing, in case someone lands here looking for the md5 checksum error. Or, in case a makeself expert goes "oh, I know what that is" :-) Some commentary is in VirtualBox/virtualbox#226 without any clarity at the moment.
