Failure during data download

Downloading data from OpenStreetMap fails with an error: "Could not download area!"

This error started to occur around June 1st, 2018. Data format changes from the OpenStreetMap API is suspected.

well the reason is probably in https://github.com/MichaelVL/osm-focus/blob/5b781c989acd7cda5a58fb7e6174bf52a8ac78e9/src/dk/network42/osmfocus/OsmServer.java#L22
This will now only give you a redirect to HTTPS because OSM started to enforce HTTPS for many services over the last months.

So we have a pull request ready about that issue.

Due to lack of time and knowledge I cannot test that sourcecode patch myself.

Is there anybody else able to do a test compiling? In case of success maybe we can have a new release in playstore or even f-droid.org?

I'm happy to test, but have no way to build the application.
Perhaps I can test it when it's been released on F-Droid.

You can also try to apply the fix suggested by poempelfox and start a beta test on Google Play (more info on beta testing here).

So, yesterday I tried editing the apk that is on Google Play Store, and after changing "http://" into "https://" in the osm-focus/src/dk/network42/osmfocus/OsmServer.java file, the app started to download again from OSM servers.

As you can see there was a pull request #3 but the owner of the project has been working on something else. Unfortunately, I don't know how to publish it and, more importantly, how to fix bugs if something comes up.
