This line you can use

            # proxy_pass         http://api_servers;
            proxy_pass          http://api:3003;

I tries it on your you code. It works fine for me.

Thank you for your kind words. I am not sure if it works like that but the idea is redirecting the requests to a group of servers with Nginx using the upstream module.
