This year we accepted 1,264 students from 62 countries into the 2018 GSoC program to work with a record 206 open source organizations this summer. + Canonical announced the release of Ubuntu 19.10 which is the fastest Ubuntu release with significant performance improvements to accelerate developer productivity in AI/ML. This release brings enhanced edge computing capabilities with the addition of strict confinement to MicroK8s, which will safeguard the complete isolation and presents a secured production-grade Kubernetes environment. This allows MicroK8s add-ons like Istio, Knative, CoreDNS, Prometheus, and Jaeger to be deployed securely at the edge with a single command. Ubuntu 19.10 also delivers other features like NVIDIA drivers which are embedded in the ISO image to improve the performance of gamers and AI/ML users.

+ Recently, the latest version of the Python programming language, Python 3.8 was made available with multiple new improvements and features. Features include the new walrus operator and positional-only parameters, runtime audit Hooks, Vectorcall, a fast calling protocol for CPython and more. Earlier this month, the team behind Python announced the release of Python 3.8b2, the second of four planned beta releases.

+ Google releases web app for Grasshopper, for teaching basic coding
+
+
+ Google has released a web version of its Grasshopper app, a tool which teaches basic coding skills.
+
+Grasshopper was first developed in Google’s experimental workshop called Area 120 and initially launched in 2018 as a mobile app for Android and iOS devices. According to Google, millions of people have since downloaded Grasshopper.

+ China says Apple needs to “think about the consequences” after reinstating a Hong Kong protest app following a backlash. Apple has found itself in an unwinnable position amid the Hong Kong protests against the Chinese government. Earlier this week, Apple received backlash for banning HKMap Live – an app which crowdsources the locations of protests, police, tear gas, ambulances, water cannons, and more – from the App Store.

+ Apple’s MacOS Catalina in major turmoil as it kills iTunes and drops support for 32 bit applications

+ Apple has confirmed that there are some serious issues in MacOS Catalina, and affected consumers should refrain from updating the OS until these issues are addressed. Catalina is finally the download that kills iTunes, which is nowhere to be found in the new update. Instead, Apple has moved the features of iTunes into their own separate Music app, the new update also includes separate apps for Podcasts and TV.
