Your idea
Would like to be able to select a passage of existing notation and convert it into a tuplet, preserving all the original notation, but now under a tuplet bracket/number, and using up the expected note durations.
Would like to be able to take an existing tuplet and remove the bracket/number to indicate the original note values etc. (possibly also changing to a different ratio tuplet)
Problem to be solved
I come across situations requiring this quite frequently.
It would obviously typically cause the total duration to reduce, much like changing a half note to a quarter note, so extra rests might be required.
Conversely, removing the tuplet indicator/bracket to revert to "plain" note values would cause total duration to increase in most cases, so it would act the same as converting a quarter note to a half note, erasing existing notation as necessary.
Prior art
Encore supported this, and at least one other engraving package I've used.
