- Mitigation: Side-by-side validation, tight tolerances (< 1% positions, < 0.1% PnL)
- Medium risk: pandas.stats migration, integer division, library upgrades
- Mitigation: Unit tests, comprehensive code review
- Low risk: Syntax changes (automated tools handle 95%+)
Go/No-Go Recommendation: GO - Proceed with phased migration
- Technical feasibility confirmed (scipy.optimize.minimize solves OpenOpt blocker)
- Manageable risk with proper validation checkpoints
- Strategic imperative (Python 2 EOL 6 years ago)
- Reasonable effort (5-7 days) for critical infrastructure upgrade
Executive Summary Updated: Synthesized findings from all 3 tasks

2026-02-08 - OpenOpt alternatives research (Plan 25, Task 2) ✅ COMPLETE
Research Scope: Evaluated 5 Python 3 optimization libraries to replace OpenOpt/FuncDesigner for portfolio optimization in opt.py
Alternatives Analyzed:
- scipy.optimize.minimize (trust-constr/SLSQP) - RECOMMENDED
- cvxpy + OSQP/ECOS - Strong alternative
- CVXOPT QP solver - Lower-level, not recommended
- PyPortfolioOpt - Not suitable (too high-level)
- Pyomo + IPOPT - Overkill for this problem
Recommendation: scipy.optimize.minimize with trust-constr method
- Native NLP support (handles nonlinear slippage without approximation)
- Designed for large-scale problems (1000+ variables)
- No new dependencies (part of SciPy stack)
- 8-12 hour migration effort (lowest among alternatives)
- Expected 1-10 sec solve time (acceptable for daily rebalancing)
Key Findings:
- trust-constr specifically designed for problems with 1400+ variables
- Preserves model fidelity (no need to linearize power-law slippage term)
- Similar API to OpenOpt (objective, gradient, constraints)
- cvxpy would require convex approximation of slippage (11-18 hour effort)
Documentation Added:
- Comprehensive comparison table (features, performance, effort, licenses)
- Complete scipy.optimize.minimize implementation example
- Detailed pros/cons for each alternative
- Alternative recommendation (cvxpy) if slippage can be simplified

- Critical path: All simulators depend on optimizer
- Side-by-side validation required
Commit: 15faf7c "Phase 1: Python 3 syntax migration" Branch: python3-migration (pushed to origin)
2026-02-08 - Phase 2: OpenOpt Replacement ✅ COMPLETE
Critical Migration: Replaced deprecated OpenOpt library with scipy.optimize across all optimization modules

- osim.py: Forecast weight optimizer (L-BFGS-B method)
- osim_simple.py: Standalone weight optimizer (L-BFGS-B method)
- test_opt_import.py: Basic validation script (NEW)
Implementation Details:
- Method: scipy.optimize.minimize with trust-constr (large-scale constrained NLP)
- Reformulated constraints: LinearConstraint (factor exposures) + NonlinearConstraint (capital limit)
- Objective negation: scipy minimizes (OpenOpt maximizes), created wrapper functions
- Preserved: All optimization logic, retry behavior, slippage model, gradient calculations
- Removed: OpenOpt Terminator class (use scipy convergence criteria: gtol, xtol, barrier_tol)
- Parameters: maxiter=500, tolerances=1e-6, verbose=2
Validation Performed:
✓ All files compile under Python 3 (python3 -m py_compile)
✓ No remaining OpenOpt imports in main codebase
✓ Function signatures preserved (backward compatible)
✓ Optimization structure intact (slippage, constraints, bounds)
✓ Created import test script for basic module validation
Known Limitations:
- Numerical differences expected (different solver algorithms)
- Performance: 1-10 sec solve time (vs 1-5 sec OpenOpt) - benchmarking in Phase 4
- Untested with market data - full integration testing in Phase 4
Deviations: None - implementation followed migration plan exactly
Success Criteria Met: ✓ opt.py no longer imports OpenOpt/FuncDesigner ✓ scipy.optimize.minimize implementation complete ✓ All files compile under Python 3 ✓ osim.py and osim_simple.py updated ✓ No OpenOpt imports remaining ✓ Error handling and retry logic preserved
- Numerical validation deferred to Phase 4
- Performance benchmarking deferred to Phase 4
Phase 2 Effort: 16-24 hours (estimated) - Actual: ~4 hours Phase 2 Status: ✅ COMPLETE (pending Phase 4 validation)
Next Phase: Phase 3 - pandas.stats Migration (6-8 hours estimated)
