Cannot update from v1.7.1

I'd like to update to the most recent version, but when clicking the update button in the GUI I get a "The changes have been applied successfully. API update process has started and is running in the background. Check back in a few minutes." and then nothing happens. Also the command pfsense-restapi update on the shell does not work because the command pfsense-restapi is not found... Unfortunately I don't remember how I installed the API some quite long time ago, but I see that a lot has changed since.

Is there a way to update the API so that I don't loose the current configuration with my API key?

Are you asking about upgrading from v1 to v2? If so, v1 and v2 are separate packages that can be installed at the same time. There’s not a direct upgrade path between them because they work independently, and their keys are not compatible.

If you want to start using v2, simply install the v2 package: v2 Installation Guide. You don’t need to uninstall v1. It's recommended to run both v1 and v2 while you migrate your integrations to use the new v2 endpoints. v1 is still being supported for the foreseeable future. When both v1 and v2 are installed:

• v1 is located under System > API and uses the pfsense-api command-line tool.
• v2 is under System > REST API and uses the pfsense-restapi command-line tool.

Otherwise, if you’re just looking to update within v1 (e.g., from v1.7.1 to the latest v1.8.0 release), run:

pfsense-api update

If there’s an issue, the command should display an error message explaining why. Let me know if you run into any trouble.
