Can REACT_APP_ROOT_ID be supported for workspace accounts without shared drives?

I would like to use a document root of a shared folder on our Google Drive account, but it appears that this is only supported for accounts with shared drives.  I was wondering if this is a limitation of the Google APIs, or if this access pattern could be supported in the future for those of us without the ability to use shared drives.
