There are several RSS aggregators that many folks are using. I use FreshRSS. I like the idea behind your app but wondered if you can use the Google API that most aggregators use to pull content and provide the data for this app.
Most aggregators support categories and if you do add support please allow specifying feeds and/or categories. In addition they all support "starred" so allow fetching the new items in the starred category. For starred you might fetch all and not just unread as often one read the article and stars it to save for later use.
